Hospital Foundation Recognizes Business Partners for Contributions

The Madison County Hospital Foundation recognized over 80 local business and civic organizations at the Annual Business Partners Breakfast on June 16 in the Harley Room at the hospital.

Corporate Gifts Chair, Gary Feliks of O’Connor’s Office Products started the morning by thanking the businesses for their continued support of MCH. “We are pleased to recognize all of you for improving the quality of life here in Madison County.”

Foundation President, Randy Crisp, thanked Foundation committee chairs who were present, Gary Feliks, Dr. Mitch Spahn, Darla Bires, and Mike Quilter. Their committees, as well as the Annual Gifts Committee chaired by Linda Houser, have helped the Foundation raise over $1.75 million for the breast cancer initiative.

Randy also announced future fundraising initiatives for the foundation. “In the weeks to come, you will begin to hear about the Foundation’s next campaign. It will be built around helping bring electronic health records to the hospital, growing our Breast Cancer Endowment Fund, and funding for medical equipment.”

Fred Kolb, CEO, discussed the progress MCH has made over the past year including improvements in both productivity and quality.

The Gordon Flesch Foundation was recognized as a new MCH Foundation Business Partner at the annual breakfast for making a $5,000 gift to the Breast Cancer Endowment Fund. “Last year you heard me explain the very difficult decisions our leadership team had to make to ensure the long-term survival of the hospital. I am pleased to announce that over the past year we have been able to make improvements such as implementing a digital radiology system and installing telemedicine, while improving our bottom line.”

Fred also took time to address the upcoming challenges hospitals will face including health care reform, the Governor’s hospital tax, and new technology requirements, including implementing electronic health records.

The KeyBank Foundation recently made a $10,000 gift to the Hospital Foundation for the Breast Cancer Initiative.

“Hospitals across the nation recognize that meeting these requirements mean the need will be greater than ever for philanthropic dollars. I am grateful that our business community understands the value in having a strong local hospital, and look forward to your support as we face an uncertain future together.”

Dr. Mitch Spahn, the Medical Director of the Battelle Breast Care Center updated the business partners as to the success of the Breast Cancer Initiative. After raising $1.75 million, including $300,000 for the breast cancer endowment fund, the Breast Cancer Initiative has reached the goals the Foundation set for the campaign.

“We are going to be able to continue providing education, screening, and treatment services to the women of Madison County thanks to the Breast Cancer Initiative and the recent grant from the Columbus Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure,” said Dr. Spahn.

Early in the year the Foundation was awarded a $100,000 grant from the Columbus Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Part of the grant allows the Battelle Breast Care Center to offer Breast Care Clinics which provide mammograms and breast exams at no out-of-pocket cost to patients. The clinics began in April, and to date, 30 patients and 41 procedures have been provided to women who are un- or under-insured.

“Right now there is no reason Madison County women should not be able to get a mammogram,” said Dr. Spahn.

Komen Columbus is a new Business Partner this year after donating $100,000 to the MCH Foundation for breast cancer screening, treatment, and education.

Following the presentation, Chairman Gary Feliks welcomed three new members to the Foundation Business Partners Honor Roll: Dwyer Chiropractic, owned and operated by Dr. Heather Dwyer; KeyBank Foundation, which has long been a supporter of hospital special events; the Columbus Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure; and the Gordon Flesch Foundation, a valued hospital supplier.

Also recognized were the nine current business partners who made new campaign commitments. Radiology, Inc’s latest pledge moved them up from the Business Partner Level to the Leader Level which recognizes cumulative gifts of $25,000 or more. Additional new gifts were given by Richard Flax of Flax Law Firm and Midland Title West, Iota Beta Chapter of Phi Beta Psi Sorority, Kiwanis, Madison County Hospital H.E.A.R.T.S. Giving Club, Madison County Hospital Auxiliary, Nissen Chemitec America, and Stanley Electric.

Special recognition was also given to Staples Fulfillment Center in London. Although Staples isn’t yet a Business Partner, Erin Cremeans, a supervisor, recently led a group of their employees in organizing a highly successful raffle. They raised over $2,500 and chose to donate those proceeds to the MCH Breast Cancer Endowment Fund.

Gary Feliks concluded the recognition event by saying, “Once again, I want to thank each of you for your generosity to the hospital and to our community. During economic times like these, it is more important than ever that we focus on supporting the organizations that improve the quality of life right here in Madison County.”
